Coach Bios:
Karl Ziehn - Program Director/Team Coach
Karl Ziehn joined SB Gymnastics in 2012 as the Program Director and Team Coach. In addition, Karl is entering his first season as 2nd assistant coach with the Stanford Men's Gymnastics Team.
Karl was a member and captain of the UC Berkeley Men's Gymnastics Team, graduating in 2003 with a B.A. in Environmental Science. Most recently he served as Head Coach for the competitive Boys and Trampoline Teams at Wallers' GymJam Academy in Los Angeles.
As a coach, Karl has developed many gymnasts from beginning through Elite. He has placed numerous athletes on the Trampoline and Tumbling US National Team and has guided many boys to State and Regional Titles. In 2009 Karl was selected as the US Head Coach for Tumbling at the Canada and CanAm Cups and Head Coach for Double Mini Tramp at the World Age Group Championships (WAGC) in St. Petersburg, Russia. At the 2009 WAGC Karl's athlete became the only athlete in the world to win gold on two events, Tumbling and Double Mini Tramp. She won additional Tumbling World Age Group Championships in 2007 and again in 2010.
As a coach, Karl is a great technician and enjoys developing a strong foundation for younger athletes. While Karl will be working with the entire Boys Team he will have an initial focus on the Level 4-9 competitors. While helping to mold the boys at SB Gymnastics into strong, successful gymnasts, Karl also intends to help lead the Cardinal to another National Title in 2013!
Karl is married and has two young boys of his own.
Ron Bell - Team Coach
Primarily coaching the Level 9 & 10 Stanford Boys Team, Ron offers years of experience and knowledge. Ron has been involved in gymnastics for most of his life and has more accomplishments than can be named here. Most recently Coach Bell coached one of his athletes, Ryan Patterson, at the 2011 World Championships where Ryan represented South Africa. Ron is a very supportive coach who is well liked among all of his athletes.
Eddie Penev – Team and Pre -Team Coach
Eddie primarily coaches the level 4 & 5 gymnasts, but also helps out with the level 6 team. He is originally from Rochester NY where he started gymnastics and quickly progressed in the Junior Olympic Program. Eddie is a 3 time All-American for the Cardinal and is currently competing in the all-around. He started coaching at his home club in Rochester helping with the compulsory boys and recreational classes. He has been involved in gymnastics for 16 years.
Sean Senters – Team and Pre-Team Coach
Sean primarily works with level 5 & 6 boys and has helped out with Stanford Boy’s Gymnastics since he arrived on the Farm. Sean is originally from Allentown PA. He has been in gymnastics for 14 years and will be competing for the Cardinal this year.
Aaron McDevitt - Recreational Coach
Aaron has been at SB Gymnastics since beginning his graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering almost two years ago. Aaron is the face of our recreational programs and coaches is known by every athlete in the program.
Hailing from Arizona, Aaron has a deep appreciation for gymnastics as a sport and as a means toward improving children as people. Aaron did not participate as a competitive gymnast but has been involved with gymnastics both as a recreational athlete and coach since a young age. He coaches with great enthusiasm!
Thom Glielmi - Team Coach
Coach Glielmi enters his tenth season as head coach of the Stanford Men's Gymnastics team. Glielmi led Stanford to the NCAA title in 2011 and was named national coach of the year after leading the Cardinal to the NCAA title in 2009. In addition to his national coach of the year honor, Glielmi is a three-time NCAA West Region Head Coach of the Year from 2006-07 and 2009, and has coached 11 NCAA Champions and 68 All-Americans.
Prior to taking over the men's team at Stanford, Glielmi spent three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota and guided the team to a No. 7 finish during his last season in Minnesota. While with the Golden Gophers, Glielmi was named the 2000-01 NCAA Assistant Coach of the Year after coaching the 2001 NCAA pommel horse and floor exercise champion. Glielmi has produced NCAA national champions on vault, rings, pommel horse, floor exercise and horizontal bar.
A USA Senior National Team Coach for ten years, Glielmi was a member of the 2006 and 2007 USA World Championships Team Coaching Staff. As head coach of the 2003 USA Pan American team he lead them to a bronze medal-winning competition. Additionally, he was part of the 2000 USA Olympic Team coaching staff.
Prior to coaching at Minnesota, he was the owner and head men's gymnastics coach of the International Sports Center in Matthews, N.C. There he founded and progressed his team toward many JO National Titles and Jr. National Team spots. A 1988 graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Glielmi holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications.
Brett McClure - Team Coach
Brett McClure enters his third season as assistant coach at Stanford and SB Gymnastics. He worked for four seasons as an assistant coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Before coaching, McClure was a world-class gymnast, competing for the U.S. men's national team for seven seasons.
As an athlete, McClure earned a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games as member of the United States team. It was the highest finish for the Americans at the Olympics in 20 years.
McClure earned national titles in the pommel horse in both 2001 and 2004 and competed in six U.S. Championships where he earned a total of 12 medals. Internationally, McClure competed in over 20 competitions, highlighted by the Olympic Games. In addition, he competed in three World Championships, twice helping the United States to silver medals.
McClure retired from competition in 2006 to concentrate on coaching. In 2012 McClure coached Alex Buscaglia to the US Olympic Trials and represented the Cardinal at the biggest competition in the USA. After four seasons with Air Force and two seasons at Stanford he coaches with the intention of helping the Cardinal bring back the national title in 2013.
